Police Chief

The Town of Winfield is seeking an applicant for the position of Police Chief to lead a growing nine-person department. Winfield is one of the fastest growing communities in the State of Indiana and expects to undergo continued growth in the coming years. The Winfield Police Department got its start 10 years ago with one officer, has grown into its current size, and will continue to grow as the Town continues to develop. The Town Council would like to hire two additional full-time officers in 2025 to continue expanding coverage and improve officer safety.

This position has a salary range of $82,000 to $90,000 per year. The salary for this position will be commensurate with education and experience. A comprehensive benefit package that includes health insurance with medical, dental and vision coverage, life insurance, and participation in the Indiana Public Retirement System, as well as personal, vacation, and sick leave.[1]

The Town is currently in the final stages of a renovation and expansion project on a new Police Department facility near the Town Hall which is expected to be completed in February 2025. In addition, the Police Department is currently designated as a “Marshal” department, but the Town Council intends to work with the incoming Police Chief to convert the Police Department into a “Metropolitan” style department, which will include considerations relating to PERF (civilian v. 1977 Police and Fire) and the creation of a public safety board.

The successful candidate will believe that community policing and excellent customer service are critical; will have demonstrated the ability to communicate effectively at each level of operation; will have demonstrated effective working relationships with elected officials, other government staff, and residents; will have working knowledge and understand their limits within the Constitutions of the United States and State of Indiana; will be Indiana Law Enforcement Academy certified and have approximately seven (7) to fifteen (15) years of active police service; and will have demonstrated a strong ability to lead and manage a team of up to 15 people.

Applicants are strongly urged to view the full job description on our website, www.winfield.in.gov/jobs before applying.  Interested and qualified candidates should apply at the Town of Winfield, Attn: Hiring Manager, 10645 Randolph Street, Suite A, Winfield, IN 46307 or download an application from our website and submit it electronically, with resume, cover letter, and references, to employment [at] winfield.in.gov (employment[at]winfield[dot]in[dot]gov) no later than 4:00PM CST, Friday, March 14, 2025.

[1] The Winfield Police Department is currently not participating in the 1977 Police and Fire Pension. The Town Council would like to work with the incoming Chief to determine if, when, and how to allow officers the option to participate in either civilian or the 1977 Fund PERF plans.
